Speech at Tsinghua University (English version)

October 31, 2013
Yukio Hatoyama
(1) I am most delighted and deeply honored to accept, on this occasion, a guest professor from Tsinghua University, China’s leading National Key University. I would particularly like to express my heartfelt thanks to President, Dr. Chen Jining for all of the efforts he made in preparation for me to receive this honor. I would not have been able to receive such recognition without the support over the years of my wife Miyuki, my greatest confidant, and I’m pleased to let you know she is accompanying me today.

(2) Tsinghua University is an excellent institution with an unrivaled reputation as the alma mater of many renowned statesman and senior officials including of course former President Hu Jintao and current President Xi Jingping but as I researched management science and reliability engineering as a university student and educator, I am fully aware of Tsinghua University’s unparalleled standing as China’s leading university in the field of science and technology responsible for educating elite technical engineers and researchers.

(3) For the past two consecutive years, I have been invited to speak at the World Peace Forum organized here at Tsinghua University, and I think it is extremely laudable that this institution is dedicated not only to the pursuit of academic excellence but also to contributing towards the peace and stability of the international community.
